I suspected 2Gb would be a bit light so ordered an 8Gb upgrade at the same time, rather than try it with 2Gb then have to order and wait for an upgrade if I needed it. As it happens when I fitted the 2 x 4Gb modules I didn't seat one of them correctly, and on initial start-up it only recognised 1 x 4Gb module. With that 4Gb it was very sluggish, and I mean very noticeably sluggish. I re-opened the case and re-seated the memory modules (very easy to do) and once it was seeing all 8Gb it really started to fly. I dread to think how slow it would be with the default 2Gb. Please, do yourself a favour and grab an 8Gb RAM upgrade straight away. It is as impressive as the old 17" 'table lamp' model I started with and my current iMac 21.5". I bought the Mini to replace the aging PC I use at my second home in France. The minimalist design of the Mac Mini, its 500Gb hard drive and Mac OS x Lion with iCloud make it the perfect partner to communicate with the iMac back in the UK. Quick and easy to set up, it was simplicity itself to migrate all my software and files from the iMac and does everything I need competently with the advantage of the intuitive OS X operating system. I was initially concerned at the lack of optical drive but manage perfectly well without it. The SD card slot enables me to copy and play music on my car audio system and I can copy files to the iCloud to download to my iMac when I return to the UK. Its portability will enable me take it back and forth and use it as a media centre in the UK connected to my TV by HDMI cable. My old Apple keyboard, Logitech optical mouse and Acer monitor were easy to connect and were instantly recognised. Only one disappointment shared by many is the lack of support for older software versions and peripherals. I am left with an excellent scanner that is no longer supported (Canon must, however, take some responsibility for that) and am no longer able to use MS Office for Mac 2004 though the Apple equivalent package, iWork is an excellent replacement at a fraction of the cost. Everything considered, the Mac Mini is a lot of computing power for the money with a very small form factor. It is completely silent and runs most applications (The only thing it would not run was a professional editing application called Avid). At a quarter of the price of the MacBook Pro, it was very good value, and unlike the iMacs I have had in the past, you do not have to chuck it when the screen starts to fail.
