4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth a look, 2 Dec 2011
This review is from: Nokia 700 Sim Free Mobile Phone - Grey (Electronics)
Don't be fooled about lack of apps, all the important ones are there, if your phone is a tool and not a toy have a good look. It's size means you can put it in our pocket without doing yourself an injury or walking with a limp, it's fast and responsive, the sat nav works well and is free, the screen is as good as it gets, has so many more features than you expect e.g. has an adapter to connect it to a TV, or an adapter to connect a USB drive direct to the phone. All this from an ex Iphone 4 user don't overlook this under sold bit of kit. The only issue I have with it is the camera is not as good as it could be, shame really.

4.0 out of 5 stars Light, easy and all you need, 28 Nov 2011

Nokia 700 works as you expect. It has a fast internet and two important buttons 1. Answer and 2. End. A-gps guides you by street names in the language you want. Touch in the screen is sensitive and nice. The weight is less than 100 grams so I can keep it in my shirt pocket. I wonder why skype is not working though I can find it in many symbian phones. I have not found technical problems so far and hope it will stay so.

I bought this phone to replace my ageing Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and first impressions out of the box were very favourable. It's a very small and attractive device with the whole front covered in Gorilla Glass and a metal back cover for the battery compartment. Overall the device feels nice and solid and well made. The first thing you notice after booting it up is how bright and sharp the Amoled screen is with highly saturated colours and pin sharp detail. The phone runs the much touted Nokia Belle operating system, but as I was to find out this was somewhat of a let down.

Compared to the resistive touch screen of the 5800, the capacitive screen on the 700 is very responsive and has a very fluid scrolling action, although this did lead to quite a few problems when browsing the web with the very small screen size contributing to a lot of these problems. Although it has the same 3.2 inch size screen as the 5800, in use it felt a lot smaller due to Nokia seeing fit to scrap full screen mode leaving a black bar at the top and bottom of the screen displaying various browser functions. A side by side comparison really did make the screen on the 700 look tiny compared to the 5800 which automatically defaults to full screen mode after a few seconds. Why Nokia have seen fit to omit full screen mode on the 700 is mystifying, especially with such a small screen to start with and a mistake which needs to be rectified asap as it can mean hitting wrong links really easily and can make web browsing a frustrating experience. Sure web pages load quite quickly with the 1ghz processor but I still found web browsing a lot easier on the 5800.

If you're a one handed texter this phone is definitely not for you. In portrait mode texting is a non starter, the keys are so small a thumb would cover at least 3 letters at once, typing a long email would have you throwing it out of the window!!! With my 5800 I would always use a stylus and tap out even long messages really quickly in landscape mode, but with the capacitive screen on the 700 it's not nearly as easy. Capacitive styli have fat rubber tips which are as large as the keys themselves and mistakes are much more easy to make and this is one area where I actually prefer the resistive screen on the 5800.

The phone does come preloaded with several useful apps, You Tube, BBCi Player, National Geographic, CNN and Shazam to name just a few but I thought it would be good to see what Nokia could offer in the way of extras in the Nokia Store. Immediately a message came up saying that a new version of Nokia Store was available and to download it. The new version downloaded really quickly using wifi but then repeatedly failed to install. After several attempts I had to admit defeat and decided to see how You Tube videos fared instead. Compared to the 5800, colours were far more vibrant with a far better black level, albeit with about the same level of detail, but the sound through the built in mono speaker was quite frankly awful. Even at full volume the sound was very weak and lacking any punch, an area where the 5800 excelled. I bought my girl friend an entry level Nokia 500 a few months ago and the sound was far far superior to the atrocious noises coming from the 700.

By now any enthusiasm I had for this new Belle phone was fast beginning to disappear and the small browsing window, the difficult messaging, the inability to install the new Nokia Store and the appalling sound quality were fast becoming a deal breaker. Sure the screen looks nice but so do many of today's modern devices, and quite frankly this screen is too small for comfort, and together with the awful sound quality is too much to put up with. As ancient as my 5800 is, I don't feel as dissatisfied with it after nearly 3 years than I did with this phone after 3 hours!!!

If you like it then try it, but there are better devices on the market than the Nokia 700.
