FROM 24th NOVEMBER, NOW COMES WITH 32GB BUILT-IN STORAGE! I've had an iPAD for some months and bought this Android tablet to avoid taking turns with it with the wife. I'm quite happy to let her have the iPAD and I prefer the Starpad for 3 main reasons.Firstly the joy of not using iTunes for synching files and having visibility of what is stored where - mounting this device as a normal USB drive and having a folder structure is so much easier to manage. Secondly I can play media content without having to convert to Apple compatible formats. 1080p MKV movies play without any motion blur or juddering. The picture quality is very good, not in the iPAD league but this is half the price. Thirdly - better interface options - USB and HDMI, and SD storage. The first charge took a little longer than the 5 hours stated but that's not a problem. I have had no issues with battery life and am used to the routine of putting it on charge overnight, same as for the iPAD. Initially the screen felt almost gritty and scrolling is not as smooth as the iPAD but after a short period the grittiness has gone. There's still the odd issue with responsiveness but that could be as much app or content based. I was also a bit unsure about the display on opening out the box - there is a visible gird pattern you don't get with the iPAD but it is not evident when in use, other than in bright light from some angles. Not an issue. I have been downloading apps and they have mostly worked fine with the Android 4 OS. I have found the Android equivalents of most of the ones I use. I opted for a wifi version only so bear in mind that you cannot use location based services properly without 3G. I'm still finding my way round some things - a comprehensive user manual would be helpful and there may well be one, I've not got round to looking yet. I would like to change the startup and background screens to something personal, and reorder the icons, when I can work out how. I ordered the 16Gb version and a 64Gb micro SD card at the same time. As a tip, you will need to format the card on a PC so you will need the appropriate reader or full size SD card converter. I formatted the card as NTFS and it was recognised in the Starpad without problem. It comes with a keyboard but I have not yet used it in anger. it also needs to be charged and the pairing process is straightforward. In terms of recommendation, I prefer it to the iPAD. I connected the Bluetooth keyboard to the tablet immediately and it makes typing so much easier and with the added bonus that it serves as a protective case for the StarPAD tablet when you?re not using the tablet. Both the tablet and keyboard are made of some kind of light metal so it feels very solid but extremely light. As for the tablet itself, it?s very fast and watching BBC iPlayer last night, there was no delay at all. I have downloaded some of my videos from my laptop and the playback quality was excellent. I?ll use it mainly for work and save carrying my much heavier laptop around with me. There?s quite a lot of memory space with the 16GB built in memory, but I also ordered an extra memory card since I will be using this for work mostly. It would be nice to have 32GB or even maybe 64GB built in. But at this price and with the build quality, I can?t complain at all. The screen responds as well as my partner?s ipad and I?m very chuffed with this (seeing how much he spent...and he doesn?t have the keyboard). Dealing with the company, Android Tablets UK, has been a great experience, they responded promptly,when I had a problem they returned the device very quickly. I guess if you are simply looking for something to stream the odd video, collate your photos and write emails/browse the web then the single core (cheapest buying option) will suffice and - it looks great unlike a lot of other Chinese budget tablets. If you want something that can multi-task well and switch between office programs and flash intensive programs then get the dual-core one instead with the leather keyboard.Have to say as far as the myriad chinese tablets out there this has to be the top choice - the customer support team are one phone call away, very polite, professional and courteous and great warranty. If you're not looking to spend the bucks that'll get you an ipad or big-name tab then this is the way to go. Will provide a more complete review when I've had a play around with my dual-core leather keyboard starpad. |
